“Falkor is a sweet and loving dog who I don’t thing was given a lot of love and attention in the past. He has really blossomed while with me. He no longer cowers when I reach to touch him; instead he seeks to be touched. He deserves all the love and attention in the world for the remaining years of his life.”

“Never give up; good luck will find you!” Falkor, the wise (and cuddly!) luckdragon from The Neverending Story, never stopped believing that everything would work out in the end. We at FBRN are just as optimistic that our own (equally cuddly!) Falkor will find his happy ending in a loving forever home.

Falkor was surrendered to FBRN because his owners could not afford to treat his allergies and his chronic ear infections. When he arrived in foster care, poor Falkor had an infection in one ear and a large mass protruding from the other, not to mention inflamed, itchy skin. A visit to the vet confirmed that Falkor’s ears were damaged beyond repair, and the only way to spare him the agony of future infections was to remove his ear canals entirely. Falkor also underwent surgery to his airway, to help him breath a bit better. Throughout all of these medical procedures (and subsequent recoveries), Falkor was sweet as sugar and stuck to his foster mom like glue, trusting her to take good care of him while he healed.

Falkor didn’t always have that trust. During his first day with FBRN, he cowered whenever his foster mom tried to pet him. When she tried to pick him up and bring him to bed, he ran into his kennel as if he was in trouble. Luckily, foster mom isn’t so easily put off. She scooped Falkor up, gave him a big hug, and brought him right to the people bed, where he army crawled and rolled about in delight! By the next morning, Falkor didn’t want to let foster mom out of his sight, and eagerly asked for pets and kisses!

Turns out that Falkor really is all about his people. He occasionally engages his canine foster sister in play, and every so often he’ll gnaw on a chew toy, but his favorite thing to do is hang out with his beloved humans. Falkor gets along with people of all ages, and he’s only met one dog that he didn’t like. He’s also willing to share his space with dog-savvy kitties, so long as they don’t disturb him during his beauty naps. The only ones who aren’t welcome are chickens, birds, and other small animals—Falkor sees them as food, not friends, and will definitely give chase!

The perfect home for Falkor is one where he can be around his people for as much time as possible. Falkor has separation anxiety, and cries when left alone. He doesn’t do it for a long time, and eventually settles down, but he is LOUD. For that reason, an apartment setting wouldn’t be a good fit for him. A house of his own, along with a dog buddy to hang out with, would be the ideal situation for Falkor. A fenced yard is a must, since Falkor’s surgeries have left him hearing impaired. He isn’t deaf, but he is definitely hard of hearing, so under no circumstances can he be let off leash in an unfenced area. For that same reason, Falkor can’t live with very small children—any kiddos in the house need to understand that he startles easily, and must take care not to sneak up on him. That goes for the adults, too! Also, kids in the house must be well-trained in door-shutting and gate-closing. A nearly deaf dog cannot hear you call.

Health-wise, Falkor is feeling much, much better now that ears are not chronically infected. He still has allergies, though, so it’s important that his ears and skin folds are regularly cleaned. That and his special, allergen-free food will ensure that he stays free of those cursed itchies!

Falkor’s foster mom is understandably smitten with her little buddy, and says: “Falkor is a sweet and loving dog who I don’t thing was given a lot of love and attention in the past. He has really blossomed while with me. He no longer cowers when I reach to touch him; instead he seeks to be touched. He deserves all the love and attention in the world for the remaining years of his life.”

Can you give Falkor his happily ever after? Fill out an application by clicking on the link below and tell us why you’re the perfect match for this special boy. Just be prepared to travel—Falcor is seeking behind-the-ear scratches in Southeastern Texas and will not be shipped.

FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo. Except in rare or unusual cases, adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family. In rare or unusual cases, FBRN may be able to assist in transporting a dog to a volunteer near the adopter's home, but the expense of transporting the dog must be the responsibility of the adopting party.

FBRN dogs are in foster care in people's private homes. For the foster families' safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don't set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
