Bear was surrendered along with his pregnant housemate Daizy Mae when their former owner could no longer care for them due to financial issues.
This teddy bear is an easygoing Frenchie who gets along with most dogs, but is particularly happy and at complete ease around female dogs. When he first came into foster care, he marked a couple of spots in the house, but this behavior completely stopped when Daizy Mae went off to her own foster home to deliver her babies- so it seems the marking was somehow related to his former housemate. He is currently peacefully co-existing with a dog-savvy cat, so homes that include cats will be considered.
At 24 lbs, Bear is a happy boy with no known health issues. He adores being near his people, and is looking to spend the rest of his life playing and cuddling with the right family. He enjoys playing with the resident dogs in his foster home for 20 minutes at a time, and then settles down for a nap.
His former living situation did not allow for him to be near his people as often as he’d like, but now he checks in with his foster people often, coming in for just a pat on the head, a belly rub, or sometimes nap with his rump leaned against a person.
He is a smart and loving guy and would really be a wonderful friend to just about anyone that has the time to show him lots of love and attention. He does not require a lot of exercise but enjoys his walks on leash and being able to explore a fenced backyard. But please don’t underestimate this laid-back guy, because when he runs he is lightning fast and very strong!
Bear is housebroken and beautifully crate trained, though we prefer he go to a home where being crated won’t often be necessary. He knows some basic commands. This Frenchie is absolutely romantic and his ideal evening includes a little walk, followed by watching some of his favorite personalities on the Food network, and lots and lots of hugs.
Ideally, Bear should go to a home where an adult can be home most of the day, or take advantage of his outgoing personality and take him to work. At this point in his life, he deserves to be around people most of the day, because he absolutely thrives on human interaction.
Bear is very nervous around young children, so he would do best in a household with only adults. He currently shares a home with two dog-savvy teenagers, and does well with them, but absolutely does not do well with the noise and potentially rough handling of younger children.
He also has a fairly high prey drive, and managed to kill some resident chickens before his foster mom could stop him. Obviously a home with no access to chickens or other birds would be best.
In short, Bear is an easygoing guy who is looking for someone that has a lot of love and time to give. He would do fine in most types of dwellings as he only barks when he’s playing. While a fence would be preferred, a nearby dog park would be perfectly adequate as well. The most important thing is that Bear be involved in all aspects of life in his new home.
According to his foster home:
"Everywhere we go people fall in love with him and his smile. He needs strong, stable parents that are not afraid to take him everywhere, see everything and introduce him to everyone because that is the life that this guy deserves. He is nothing short of a best friend and companion, and should be treated like one. No long days alone for him!"
If Bear sounds like the right dog for you, please apply for him and be willing to pick him up in Northern California, because he will not be shipped.
