Update 2/9/10
With diligent oversight, Bindi hasn't had a single accident in the house in over a week. Her only "indoor" potties are the pee or poops on the pee pad in her kennel, prob 3 nights out of 4. She's not soiling her bedding anymore either, when she goes in there it's on the far side on the pad.
Bindi is also taking fewer meds, and now they're more like $40/mo.
Bindi is a girl with a mysterious past. She came to us from a shelter in Illinois, and prior to that another shelter in different state. We heard she was removed from a hoarder’s property with a large number of dogs, but we don’t know for sure. Let’s just say she has been though the wringer in her 2 _ years, and it is high time she got settled into a forever home where she will be cared for and loved for the rest of her days.
Despite her difficult beginnings, this little frog is an adaptable sweetheart who really loves people. As far as we know she hasn’t been around small kids, but given her easy temperament we think she would do great with sturdy youngsters over the age of seven. She ignores the kitties in her foster home (and the bunny, too!) but if they run from her she isn’t above giving them chase. She is a little bit pickier about dogs. She gets along well with confident dogs (like herself.) She tends to bully smaller, submissive dogs. She doesn’t guard her food or toys.
Bindi is not yet reliably housetrained, and often sullies her kennel at night and occasionally poops in her crate between the morning and mid-day break. This is not surprising given her past, so patience and consistency will be necessary. Her potty training challenges are complicated by some unspecified bowel issues, which might eventually be diagnosed as IBD. To control this, she is on a strict diet that includes a mix of special canned and kibble food, and a twice daily dose of a medication called Tylosin, which currently runs about $70 a month. Her veterianarian and foster parents are working on decreasing the dosage to find the minimum amount she needs to stay healthy and regular with her bowel movements. Her forever people must be willing to stick to this regime for the rest of her life.
Bindi enjoys short walks (and will enjoy longer ones when the weather warms up.) She potties fine on a leash so it isn’t strictly necessary that she have a fenced yard, but beware – if she is loose, she will try and escape. She is good at getting around baby gates, etc. in the house, too. A regular Houdini!
This sweet girl is a world-class snuggler and lap-warmer. She'll get up for the occasional zoom around with a squeaky toy or a tennis ball or a chew on the boney-bone, but overall prefers lap time. She does a pretty good job of asking to be picked up and put on the furniture (putting her front legs up on you 'til you pick her up by the armpits) rather than just jumping up on her own, which is great, because it protects her spine (a delicate area in French Bulldogs.) She responds well to her name and is quickly learning to sit, and while she doesn't appear to have any formal obedience training she has lovely leash manners.
A single person, couple, or family with kids would all work for Bindi as long as they are dilligent about her diet and medication and are willing to work with her housebreaking. Above all she needs a home where whe will gets lots of love and attention and be allowed to snuggle on the furniture with her people. Multi-person households might be best if that meant shorter nights, staggered work schedules and more frequent breaks during the day. First time Frenchie owners would be fine as long as they understand her requirements.
Bindi would enjoy going to the office with someone if there weren’t a bunch of other dogs she’d be expected to get along with, since she’s picky on who she befriends. Apartment, townhome, house in the city or country – all fine.
A few final words from Bindi’s foster mom:
“Bindi really is a total lovebug and hearts melt when people meet her. Her darling little pouty face just can't be ignored! She gives the softest little kisses from time to time. She's ready to be your couch potato buddy and soak up the loving! And she really does have the softest coat around and that‘ll stand up in court!”
If you long for a pouty faced girl with a heart of gold, Bindi is the answer to all your dreams. She is taking a little nap in Iowa, just waiting for your application to float in. Be sure to get the car all gassed up, as Bindi will not be shipped!
