Bullwinkle is a very sweet boy who was brought, along with his friend Rockye, from Germany by his previous owner. They were then unceremoniously dumped in a back yard where they have lived neglected for the last four years, starved for food and human companionship and deprived of even the most basic veterinary care. After spending time in foster care and getting healthy, Bullwinkle is ready to move on to the next phase of his life as a permanent, adored pet in his forever home.
Bullwinkle is mostly in tip top condition, but he does have a small bald spot on his lower back, and a droopy ear. It’s quite likely that these are both due to allergies. Bullwinkle seems to have a disagreement with wheat products, so he needs to be kept on a wheat-free food. He’s currently on a salmon and sweet potato diet and has done quite well. His new family must be willing to continue this diet to ensure Bullwinkle’s allergies don’t act up. Other than that, Bullwinkle is 'strong like bull' and is rarin’ to go!
Bullwinkle is a performer, a happy camper, a mischief maker, and a leader. He is quite bright and takes instructions very well. He is also very bossy and enjoys “yelling” at his foster dad to hurry up. He is also a complete exercise nut, loving to go for long runs and playing all the time. Bullwinkle is great with people of all ages, including children, but he’s not such a fan of other dogs. He has given many warning snaps to larger dogs, and he seems to have a strong prey drive, so he would do best in a home without other animals. Some dogs just need to be your one-and-only, and after the past few years of neglect, we think Bullwinkle deserves a home where he can be the center of the universe.
Bullwinkle is housebroken and is completely trustworthy when given free run at his foster home. He has a crate but prefers having the option to use it or not. Bullwinkle doesn’t have formal obedience training, but he knows his name, understands when he is told “no,” and will sit for a treat to wait at a crosswalk when he goes for a run with his foster dad. Bullwinkle would benefit greatly from obedience training in his new home, and it would be an excellent way for him to bond with his new people!
Bullwinkle’s ideal home would have a fenced yard. Because he doesn’t play nicely with other dogs, he must always be on-lead and carefully monitored when outside of his yard or his home. Bullwinkle would be happiest with someone that jogs and can take him out regularly for long runs. He is capable of running several miles. He also demands a lot of attention and isn't that particular where it comes from, so he would fit in well with a large family as he gets along very well with children. Bullwinkle has made a tremendous amount of progress while in foster care, but he is still reactive towards other dogs and would do best in a home with an owner who is experienced in dealing with these kinds of issues. Bullwinkle would be happiest with someone that is home all day, but he is only really concerned about going out for long walks. If someone could walk or run him for several miles, then he would probably be reasonably content. He could adjust well to going to the office, as long as he was the only dog there. Bullwinkle needs, more than anything, the love and trust of a forever home.
Here’s what his foster dad has to say: "Bullwinkle was handed a lot of initial setbacks in life, which resulted in him spending the first few years of his life locked in confinement. Now that he's free from that predicament, he's looking to make up for all that lost time. Although Bullwinkle is over five years old, he still has the energy and exuberance of a puppy. He has a passion for running, and even hikes over several miles doesn't tire him out. He will even stop in the midst of a meal for the opportunity to go outside for a walk. Bullwinkle is a sweet, happy clown that just wants to please people. While he has some dog aggression issues, he has been working very hard to remedy those issues and has made significant progress."
If you want to smother Bullwinkle in kisses for the rest of his life and get the best jogging partner you could ever want, start planning your trip to California. Bullwinkle is being fostered in the Bay Area and won’t be shipped.
