More puppy pulchritude coming your way courtesy of FBRN. Casanova was surrendered due to a recurrence of a prolapsed rectum. The condition was caused by an intestinal infection when he was a wee baby. In August it was surgically corrected with a Colopexy (where the colon is tacked to the abdominal wall to prevent future prolapses) and he’s all healed up from his surgery.

Although we initially thought this much-needed surgery was Casanova’s only medical need, additional time in foster care has revealed that he either has severe food allergies, or possibly Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). He is currently undergoing restricted food trials (trying different formulas) to see what helps him the most. Currently he is doing well, though he does experience bouts with diarrhea every now and again, so his foster family (along with their vet) are working hard to figure out the diet that works best for him. Since his initial surgery he developed cherry-eye, and that has been fixed.

Although he loves children, it will best if he joins a family that does not include very young children who are likely to share any food with a dog. Any contamination of his diet can end in a disastrous bout of diarrhea, so it’s best to not tempt fate. Sometimes a delightful puppy just can’t catch a break.

Casanova walks well on a leash. He knows sit and is working on heel, come, and stay, off, and leave it. He responds quickly to gentle corrections when necessary. A real Velcro dog, Casanova follows his foster mama wherever she goes. He is crated for a bit during the day next to the resident dogs and bears it, but at night he puts up such a fuss that his soft-hearted foster parents allow him to sleep in the human bed where he absolutely loves it.

Housebreaking is a work in progress, but he’s made great strides. The only accidents he’s had in the past few weeks have been related to diarrhea due to an upset tummy. When he’s feeling well, he’s very good at only eliminating in the yard.

Like approximately 100% of happy, well-adjusted puppies, Casanova loves to play. With people. With dogs. With kids. Play, play, play, chase, chase, chase. He hasn’t met any cats yet, but this study suggests that pups up to the age of 6 months are likely to adjust: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3688435,00.html If you have a dog-savvy cat and are interested in Casanova, please read it and judge for yourself before applying.

Casanova is very easygoing and will bring his forever family tons of joy. He would probably do best in a home or condo where he can have access to a yard. He loves most people, but is afraid of some men, sometimes even peeing when he’s very afraid. His future family will need to understand how to be firm and loving without the need to yell in loud voices.

He should have a dog to play with, as long as the dog can handle puppy energy. He does “get the memo” and leaves the 7 year old dog in his foster home alone when he gives him a correction saying he has had enough.

First time Frenchie people are encouraged to apply. Of course, first timers will want to do their homework on the breed, and be aware of potential issues and find a vet experienced with French bulldogs before taking any young frog home.

Casanova would do well with someone who is able to work from home. He is well-behaved, but his possible food allergies/IBS need to be monitored.

Some final words for Casanova’s lovestruck foster mom:

“Casanova is a wonderful little puppy who is full of love and is anxious to please. He is a smart boy and quickly learned the routine in my house. By the end of day one, he knew exactly where to go sit in the kitchen for a cookie after his walk. He recovered quickly from his surgery and we’re working out the rest. He does well with baths and grooming. I would prefer for him to go to a home with at least one dog so he can have a playmate and companion because he loves to zoom, wrassle, play tag, chew on Nylabones and stuffies, be near his people and take long lazy naps."

His foster parents are working hard to get Casanova in the best possible shape before he goes off to his forever home. Keeping him diarrhea-free will take some work and absolute vigilance over his diet, but he’ll reward the lucky family with typical puppy rambunctiousness and tons of love.

If you’re up for puppy energy and kisses, please apply for Casanova. He’s pouncing around in southeast Florida, and you’ll need to stake your claim in person if you want to take him home. Casanova will not be shipped.
