Some dogs don’t stand a chance in this world, but fortunately Liko escaped being one of them. An unsuspecting couple had purchased Liko from an unscrupulous breeder who claimed he simply needed to be housebroken—turns out that Liko had been diagnosed with Spina Bifida, and is incontinent. They took care of him very well, but the anticipated arrival of a child meant that they could not give Liko the time that he needed. Several of our volunteers helped Liko make the journey from Hawaii to an experienced foster home in Colorado. Liko’s foster mom has an affinity for incontinent dogs (and makes the cutest and colorful doggy diapers for our fosters!) She is already sad at the thought of Liko leaving for his forever home, but knows that Liko has a future of being loved and cared for, and that he will bring much happiness to his person or family.

Liko is a special needs dog as he is permanently incontinent, and will never be housebroken. We’ll say more about his needs, but the first thing that everyone notices when they meet Liko is that he is extremely special! Liko is a happy creature that sees only the good in things. He loves every dog he meets, whether they are big or tall, male or female, and enjoys playing and romping around the yard with them. Liko does not have a mean bone in his body. He will play tug, but the other dogs usually let him win. Besides getting along fabulously with other dogs, Liko also loves his people, and hasn’t met a stranger. He adores all the humans he meets and is always ready to be lifted into your arms for a good cuddle. To avoid the risk of a toddler falling on him, Liko would do best in a home with dog-savvy kids over the age of five.

Liko needs his diaper changed frequently during the day, so ideally his forever home would have a work-at-home or stay-at-home person. If his forever person or family works, Liko will need someone who can either come home during lunch, or have a pet sitter visit during the day. Liko would also make a wonderful addition to an office—to Liko, all people are his friends, and he wouldn’t need to interrupt his person’s workday with several long walks.

This happy boy is submissive and laid-back, and he has a busy bee and a loafer side. He is not extremely strong, and if his forever home enjoys long walks, he’d happily travel in a stroller. He loves to hunker down for a good snuggle with his people and his furry friends. Liko does not need a ton of exercise; he enjoys playing in the back yard and napping when he is tired. He’s a great Nylabone chewer and is an excellent de-stuffer of stuffies.

Besides the Spina Bifida, Liko has no other known health problems. It is possible that he will experience UTIs in the future, but ten days of Clavamox usually clears that right up. He is crate-trained, but prefers an X-pen, which must have a lid or he will climb out.

Liko will fit in almost any household that will love and cherish him. It would be preferable if Liko had a back yard, but it is not a requirement. Liko does not do well with stairs, so either a bungalow or an apartment with an elevator will suit him just fine. Liko has not been with cats or birds, but since he shows no prey drive, dog-savvy cats will be considered. First-time Frenchie owners would suit him just fine, as long as they don't mind changing his diapers.

His foster mom has this to say about Liko:

“Liko is such a love. He loves to be held like a baby and will sleep in your arms. He loves to snuggle with a warm furry friend during the day when his family is busy. He loves his stuffies, at least to de-stuff them. He is a bit of a stinker when its time to change his diaper. He rolls over on his back and turns into what I call dog jello. I give him a belly scratch and turn him over and tell him to stand. He does and then expects his loving, and off he runs to his new adventure or nap.”

Liko is bringing smiles to his foster family in Colorado, who will miss his good nature and warm cuddles. Liko will happily be seatbelted in your lap as he travels to his new home, but he will not be shipped.
