update 2/2/10
Rabit is sleeping all night now, woohoo! She no longer screams, either. She is maturing and is probably a year old now. She chews on appropriate things and no longer chews on my ears. She has gained strength and got on the couch on her own for the first time today. She is still tiny and a stick of dynamite!
This wee Rabit hopped into FBRN through the efforts of another wonderful breed rescue group. She’s a diminutive pied sprite, weighing in at only 14 pounds, and she is very young – older than six months, less than a year. For her “designated birthday” purposes we’ll call her eight months. You do the math!
Rabit had some skin problems when she arrived, but those are cleared up now, and her remaining health issue is one that her forever family will need to take into careful consideration, as it is life long. She has Spina Bifida, which for practical purposes means that she needs her bottom wiped after she poops and that she needs to be let outside fairly frequently. She is likely to have UTI’s from time to time, so her family will need to be alert to them and give her medication when needed.
The great news is that Rabit is housetrained and she really lets you know when she has to GO! She calls you from wherever you are and she makes sure you hear her! She really tries her level best to get outside in time (which is pretty great for a Frenchie this young!) but because of her condition, she occasionally has minor accidents on the way out. Rabit usually needs a break at night, and she’ll wake you to let you know.
Aside from her Spina Bifida, Rabit is in swell shape. Rabit likes dogs. Big, small she loves them all, but if she feels they are getting too pushy she will try to take them down. You can almost see her fur buddies laugh at her when she gets a bee in her bonnet. She will need a laid-back tolerant pal who won’t mind a little Rabit as a napping buddy, as she loves to snuggle. Rabit has not been around cats or birds, so we’ll say no to those, though she really hasn’t displayed anything like a prey drive in foster care.
Rabit is a puppy, and she has all the hilarious, high action antics that go with the territory! She is a bundle of energy, a happy camper, mischief maker and even displays some leadership qualities (but will follow if it suits her.) Yes, this little hopper is a busy bee with two speeds. FAST. And STOP. When she gets tired she crashes into a deep slumber, wherever she happens to be. Rabit cannot go for long walks, but would probably like to be in a stroller. Otherwise, she seems to get plenty of exercise just racing around the house, especially if she has a dog or two to stand in as her “gym equipment”.
Rabit has a mixed personality – sometimes submissive, sometimes dominant, but never aggressive. As she matures she is getting to be more of a snuggly girl. She doesn't like to be held on her back but likes to stand up and snuggle your chest. Watch your ears or they may be pierced with love bites! Kids would be fine companions for Rabit. We think youngsters over the age of five would be best prepared to deal with Rabit’s puppy antics!
In case you’ve forgotten, puppies like to chew. Chew, chew, chew. You have to watch out for your computer cords, etc. until she grows out of this.
Rabit makes noise when she wants (or needs) something and she has quite a set of pipes, so an apartment might not be the best place for her. She needs to live in a home where she doesn’t have to climb stairs. A fenced yard would be nice, but not strictly necessary.
Because of her need for fairly frequent potty breaks, Rabit needs to be with someone most of the day. This could be at home or she could hop along to the office and act as assistant. A first time Frenchie owner would be fine for Rabit.
Here are a few words from Rabit’s foster mom: “Rabit has such a personality. You’ve heard dynamite comes in small packages. That is Rabit! She may have been named Rabit because she zooms around with a hopping gait, just like a bunny! She wants to be loved and have a warm fur body to nap with. She has learned to snuggle while in foster care, but only wants to when it’s her choice. Sometimes she is just to busy to stop and take the time!”
Rabit is a hoppin’ and a hollerin’ in Northern Colorado. If you think you can keep up with her, you’d best get ready to romp on up and try to catch her yourself, as Rabit will not be shipped!
