When the Humane Society called to let us know they had found a brindle girl a wandering, but that her chip had never been registered and no one had claimed her, we hopped up and headed out to pick up this dear girl.

Judging by the size of her nipples and her recent c-section, she has been a breeder for a while now. From time to time we do find these females, recently bred and wandering the streets. It’s as if someone had simply booted them out a door, and without so much as a “Thanks for making me some money!”, abandoned them. We found several a year or two ago in the same area of Southern California, and we frequently find them, like precious stones, unexpectedly turning up in farmlands in the Midwest. Unbelievable, the ingratitude of people, isn’t it? Oh, well. Let us be thankful that this brindle beauty is with us and not flattened on some highway or starving down among some lovely Texas bluebells.

We discovered right away that she had a very icky and contagious case of ear mites, which we are in the process of dispatching to a better world. Her tongue perpetually peeks out of her mouth in an adorable, tasting-the-air sort of way. She has limited vision in one eye due to scarring and she has an overgrowth of tissue on the surface of the other eye. She was fully vaccinated at the time of her vet visit, and she had a heartworm, lyme, and erlichia test, her fecal was negative and she had a basic CBC because she looks unwell, and obviously has not had very good care. Most horribly, she is terrified all the time and doesn’t move from where she is put, fearful that something is coming at her and she doesn’t know what it will be. Imagine living that way.

Abilene is going to need some serious rehabilitation. She will need a patient and loving foster family, long term recovery and socialization. We can give her those things.

Are you a Texan? How’d you like to pony up a bit of dough for Abilene’s care? You could challenge your fellow Texans to donate bigger than you! If you aren’t a Texan but you have the hat and the attitude, we’ll gladly accept your donation, too! Hey, we’ll even take your dang money if you wouldn’t be caught dead within 20 miles of a ro-day-oh and haven’t any idea what a little dogie is.

We would really like to see Miss Abilene on her feet and joyfully chasing a ball or fatly wrassling with a fellow frog. Help us make it happen. Click on her photo and tell us it’s for our little yellow rose, Abilene.
