hospice dog
5/5/09 Update from his wonderful foster mom who will care for Batboy while in Hospice:
Batboy, a 10 year old brindle male, is currently living out his senior days in our home. He is a little bit of a thing, weighing in at only about 16lbs. Small for his breed, but very mighty indeed!
Batboy is being treated for congestive heart failure and an ulcerated eye. His troubles don't stop there, though. Never being neutered, he has developed a testicular tumor which is now affecting his prostate. Because of his bad ticker, Batboy can not, at this time, survive surgery to remove the tumor. His stance and swagger is a little off-kilter because of this condition but it doesn't stop him from the occasional romp in the backyard with his housemates.
When he's not playing, Batboy loves to snooze in the sun or cuddle in your lap. His favorite toys are things like Nylabones that are chewy.
The vet only gives our Batboy 3-6 months of time left with us. We, of course, are aiming for more.
Batboy is a 10 year-old guy whose former dad had to take a job with very long hours that left Batboy lonely. He was a much-loved Frenchie and we were sorry to have to tell his person that our vet has discovered some serious health issues.
Batboy is in congestive heart failure. That's pretty easily treated with Lasix, a diuretic drug that will reduce the amount of fluid in the tissues around his lungs and heart.
Batboy has a tumor on one of his testicles, but we can't neuter him until his heart is stronger. The vet believes the cancer has spread, because he found a nodule on Batboy's prostate. Batboy's prognosis is very guarded.
We aren't going to tell Batboy any of this, of course. It might slow him down, and right now he is a zesty little frog who is keeping up with the youngbloods in his foster home and showing them a thing or two in the way of Frenchie wrasslin' holds and nip and tear zoomies. He's a cuddle-lumpkin and a sweetie-pie, too, and it's easy to see why giving him up was so hard for his family.
We will do all we can for Batboy to keep him comfortable and provide a loving home for him for the rest of his life, however long that may be. FBRN will be providing for him while he is in hospice care. Any donations you send will be used to support him and provide palliative care. Here's to the old boys and girls of rescue- they are some of our most needy, most rewarding cases, and we always hear from our wonderful supporters that they are so glad we are here for the old timers. We are proud to be able to help these old souls, and we get so jazzed and energized when our supporters send notes of encouragement with their donations, no matter how small or large they may be. We love to hear from you! |
