OKLAHOMA 10 PUPPYMILL

Puppy Kerrie was removed from the puppy mill grinder along with her mother. Her mother, who was purchased outright by one of the FBRN volunteers, will not be available for adoption, but she will never be bred again, either. And that is a good thing, since she suffers from a painful and debilitating joint condition that is passed on genetically. She should never have been bred in the first place, and we suspect that many of the puppies she produced for pet stores will develop the same condition, which must be surgically corrected if the dog is not to live in pain. A responsible breeder would not have used Kerrie's mother in a breeding program. Millers simply don't care if the dogs they use for producing puppies are healthy or sound, and they don't care if the puppies they produce are healthy. They want your money. And that's all they care about.

Kerrie and her mother were found, as all the dogs were, to be covered in ticks. Kerrie's foster mom counted 50 on Kerrie alone, and there were more. More than 50 ticks on a 22 pound dog. Many of the tick bites were surrounded by red circles, so the dogs will be on a course of tetracycline to guard them against infection. Neither dog had had even basic rabies or other vaccines.

Here's what her foster mom says about Kerrie:

"She is all paws and smiles. One ear has failed to stand all the way up which gives her a goofy look that goes with her personality. Actually she is growing into her paws, so I think she is 4-6 months old. She howls well for attention, especially at 2 am and every so often after that. She is a loveable clown. Hubby and I joked about the doggy alarm, but she has no snooze button.

"Neither are housebroken; both girls are submissive wetters, and just all around submissive. They do not willingly come out of their crates or out of the play yard. Even treats of roast beef are not enough of an enticement to approach a person within arms reach. But, Kerrie will still chase a ball and fetch a stick. Her mother tries to keep up, but doesn't have the agility the baby does; this glimpse of the instinct to play tells us both still have some spirit left in those stubby little bodies.

"I have had 3 showers since the auction Saturday and still don't feel clean. Not only was the experience nasty, but the open cesspool, 10 feet off the kennel, was wafting in the wind, strong enough to gag a buzzard. As we all know, if you can smell it, there are particles in the air. That type of waste disposal breeds typhoid and other diseases and just the thought of it made me feel queasy. The only thing to be thankful for, was that it was less than 60 degrees and too early in the year for mosquitoes. We came home and everyone bathed and scrubbed, and then scrubbed a bit more."

Welcome Kerrie to a life outside themill and to fresh air and wellness care and good food and clean water! She has a long life of luxury ahead.
