UPDATE! 7/31/08
Liberty Belle has a lot of things to overcome. She has lupus, which is causing the skin on her face, ears and around her rectum to erupt, bleed and get infected. She has an eye ulcer, and when it heals there may be scarring. Moreover, her foster mom reports:
"She has very loose bilateral patellas due to poor conformation, which may need to be corrected down the road, as well as a possible ACL repair. This causes her to walk lame and sometimes a little wobbly and crooked. Her lupus could also cause some joint issues as well."
Liberty Belle is nine months old. She was dumped in a night drop outside a shelter one night last week, taken in by an all-breed rescue and then turned over to us for vet care and placement. She is very sick.
Liberty Belle is malnourished. Her facial folds are oozing and infected. Her nose is crusty and runs constantly.
Her toenails are extremely long, indicating that she has had no exercise or grooming. One of her toenails is missing completely, and one was abcessed and recently ruptured. We suspect that she has been living on wire, and perhaps caught her toenails in the wire, pulling one out and nearly pulling out the other.
She came to us over the Independence Day holiday and someone suggested she be named for our nation's symbol of freedom. Liberty Belle is far too young to have known such neglect, but we hope to teach her about loving families and gentle hands and soft voices. If you'd like to sponsor her as we clean her up, get her healthy, and prepare her for a life of comfort and freedom, just click on her photo.
