Oh, this poor Muffin is nothing you'd want to butter and eat! She is a very sick little Muffin! She was found as a stray in Ohio and she was turned in to the local animal shelter. The wonderful animal shelter director worked with us to bring Muffin to rescue, where she would have a chance at a life, since she needs special care.

Muffin has known and loved people before. She met her foster dad at the door like he was Santa Claus and the Easter bunny all in one and spent her first night all snoogled up beside him on the couch, watching TV. She has given poor Vinnie, the resident Frenchie, the cold shoulder, however, and is NO HUMOR for any shenanigans or tug of war or wrasslin'. NO thank you. Was she stolen and then bred and bred and bred? Who knows?

Muffin is a sad case, for all that she has a great personality and a loving heart. She has clearly been used as a breeder and she has not been well cared-for. Multiple Cesarean section scars run along her belly. She is not housetrained. Worst of all, she has a very serious infestation of heartworms. Her vet has been very forthright with us--when he saw her, she was quite close to death, and the heartworm treatment itself is no Night at the Opera. Muffin is four days into the treatment, and she is still alive, but that could change as the adult heartworms begin to die and her lungs are affected. She has 3 and a half more weeks of absolute crate rest--no exercise apart from potty breaks--and then more shots. These are the cases that break our hearts. If you are breeding a dog for money and keeping the dog outside, the very least you could possibly provide in terms of vet care is heartworm preventative. From a purely business perspective, it makes no sense to let your animals get sick. Unless you figure that once they get really sick, you can just dump them out of your car and go to an auction and buy a new one. Some days it is hard to write these bios without getting very, very angry...

We'd appreciate any help we could get for poor Muffin--you can click on the photo to the right to donate. And spare a loving thought for her brothers and sisters still pumping out babies while suffering from heartworm. And spread the word--don't buy puppies from puppy mills. Show them a photo of Muffin. Tell people why not.
