Story
While he may not be dark and brooding like his famous namesake, Poe is certainly a character worth writing home about. This three year old cream colored cutie is ready to leave his past behind and begin a much happier chapter. Please welcome Poe to the Available page!
Poe came into FBRN’s care when the cost of his medical needs became too much for his previous owner to manage. Since arriving in foster care, he has shown himself to be an affectionate, sensitive boy who wants nothing more than to stay close to his people. Poe is a true love bug whose favorite place is right beside his human, soaking up attention, companionship, and cuddles whenever possible.
When he is not snuggled up nearby, Poe enjoys bones, toys of every kind, and showing off his backyard zoomies. Toss a ball for him and he will happily chase after it, though returning it is sometimes open to interpretation. He rides beautifully in the car and genuinely wants to please the people he trusts.
Because Poe was under socialized early in life, unfamiliar environments and new situations can make him nervous at first. When unsure, he tends to tuck himself behind his person’s legs and quietly take everything in until he feels comfortable. He is a smart and thoughtful little dog who benefits from patient guidance, consistency, and reassurance while he builds confidence.
While in FBRN care, Poe underwent major ear surgery (TECA) due to severe chronic ear disease and previous trauma. Because of the chronic nature of his previously untreated ear infections and the severity of the damage they caused, Poe’s left ear will need to be closely monitored for the rest of his life. His adoptive family will need to be willing to work with a pet dermatologist to ensure his ear does not incur more trauma. Although he can hear and clearly recognizes familiar voices, sounds, and his name, his hearing is impaired. It is difficult to know exactly how much he hears, and at times people may need to move into his line of sight to get his attention. Because of this, Poe can startle easily if surprised. He also has a remarkably loud bark for such a compact little gentleman, something he does not seem to realize himself.
While with FBRN, he was also neutered and had his nares widened. He occasionally regurgitates water, but that has improved after ear surgery. To help manage this, he takes daily Zofran.
Poe currently lives with other dogs and does well overall, though he is still learning social manners and can occasionally be the first to stir up a little mischief. His ideal home would be calm, structured, and predictable, either adult only or with older teens who understand how to respectfully interact with dogs. A quieter home where someone is around often would help Poe continue to feel secure and thrive.
A fenced yard for zoomies would make Poe very happy. He could do well as an only dog soaking up all the attention, or with one laid back dog of similar size and temperament. Cats and small animals are likely not the best fit. Because unfamiliar sounds and vibrations can make him anxious, Poe also needs a detached home rather than a shared wall living environment.
Experience with French Bulldogs or with dogs who have experienced medical or emotional challenges would be a wonderful fit for Poe. Beneath his cautious side is a deeply loving companion who simply wants to feel safe, understood, and included. Once you earn his trust, Poe is ready to write a loyal and loving new story with his forever family.
His foster mom reports, “Poe just wants to be loved. He needs someone who is patient and kind and who is truly motivated to rescue a dog. Someone who is ready to be the sun and the moon for this little four legged buddy and who is willing to put him first. He’s had a rough life but it hasn’t diminished his love for life and his future family needs to be ready to continue to show him all the amazing things this world has for a sweet frog dog like him.”
This handsome boy is ready to find the forever family he deserves. If you think Poe would be a great addition to your home, complete an application and be ready to welcome this lovable guy into your life.
FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family.
FBRN dogs are in foster care in people’s private homes. For the foster families’ safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don’t set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
