Dogs are amazingly resilient and Vernon is no exception. Even though he is paralyzed, Vernon recently regained use of hind legs to spinal walk. He is bladder and bowel incontinent due to his paralysis. To keep accidents at bay, Vernon wears a belly band. This needs to be frequently changed and he needs time to “air out” so he doesn’t suffer any urine scalding. He is also bowel incontinent, but his foster mom has been able to get him on a regular schedule. His future family must be okay with the occasional present he may leave inside the house.

Vernon currently lives with other dogs and likes to play with his canine foster siblings – similar-size or calmer, larger dogs would be the best match to prevent further future injury. We think Vernon also wouldn’t mind being an only dog.

Vernon doesn’t really realize his limitations (what limitations?). He is an energetic and friendly guy, cruising at top speeds in his cart around the neighborhood and always has to be where the action is. He loves to play with stuffed toys and will absolutely entertain a game of fetch. He doesn’t necessarily need a fenced yard in his new home but he does need to be supervised when outside. House or apartment, he could probably thrive anywhere. But keep in mind he needs to be carried up and down all stairs! Vernon is a pretty quiet guy, unless it’s feeding time, then your neighbor’s might be alerted by his barking. He is currently fed in a crate, not because he has shown any signs of protecting his food, but because he gets pretty excited when it’s time to eat. Who doesn’t, really?

Like most Frenchies, Vernon is used to receiving all the attention. And now with his hind-leg paralysis, he requires a bit more care and attention, so someone who is home most of the time would be ideal for him. He could most likely adapt to an office as long as the other officemates don’t mind him being employee of the month every single month. He has done well with children when they have come to visit, but does greet them with excitement before settling so perhaps older, respectful kids would be the best match.

“Vernon was very loved but the circumstances his former owner was in just didn’t allow for him to receive the attention and care he needs. He adjusted very quickly to our household routine and seems like he has lived her for years. He fit right in. Vernon is a busy body who always has to be where the action is; he has FOMO (fear of missing out). He loves other dogs and people but I think his most favorite thing is meal time. Our hope is that there is someone out there who recognizes what a special guy he is and is willing to give him a chance at his happily ever after. You know what I mean Vern?? (I say that to him all the time.)”

Vernon is probably a bit too big to fit under the seat on an airplane so if a loving little shadow sounds like a great addition to your family, submit an application and plan your trip to Northern California.
