Story
Another one of FBRN’s feisty, yet adorable Frenchies is ready to move in with his forever family! Archer found his way to FBRN after rupturing a disc in his back, which required surgery (and he had already been through one disc injury with his previous family). His family made the heartbreaking decision to lovingly surrender him when another occurred, as they knew they could not help with rehabilitation the second time around. Archer came through his back surgery like a champ and even though he is a bit wobbly at times, he has shown that he can walk and get around quite well. Despite the surgery being a success, he does need to be carried up and down stairs and kept as calm as possible so as not to exacerbate his back issues. He is a very playful dog and will overdo it if he isn’t managed.
Speaking of being playful…Archer LOVES other dogs. He’s been lucky to have not one, not two but three Frenchies to keep him company while living with his foster family. He’s spent time with an 11-year-old cranky female, a 2-year-old skittish male, and a 6-year-old back end paralyzed male (who has become best friends with Archer). The two of them love to sit together on a big dog bed, lick each other’s faces, chew on bones, play tug of war, and just nap together. Archer would probably love to go to a home with other dog his size, or possibly bigger if they are relatively relaxed dogs who wouldn’t encourage him to overdo it and hurt his back again. While Archer loves his canine friends, felines or other small animals are probably a no go. He seems to have a pretty strong prey drive and based on what his foster mom has witness him do to toys that jiggle and jump around, he just might go after cats. While he might not hurt them, he would most definitely annoy them.
Archer really likes to be outside, so a fenced-in yard would be ideal for him, especially given his back issues. His favorite pastimes are taking leisurely jaunts in the backyard to sniff out the best poop spot, sitting at the fence to stare at the neighbor’s dog, lounging in the grass with his foster fur-siblings, chewing on toys, playing tug-of-war or taking some solo time to sun himself. He also tends to pull when walking on a leash and while his foster family has worked hard to try to break him of that habit, it will still require some more training. When Archer is inside his favorite place is…with a person – ANY person – and sometimes he barks/howls if he is left someplace where he can’t get to you (if you’re upstairs and he’s downstairs and vice-versa).
This boy sure does love his toys and bones. He also LOVES to chew things – all the things. Anything left out on his level is fair game – paper bags, kid toys, cords, shoes, stair railings, and wicker baskets. This destructive behavior mostly seems to be out of boredom, as he’s a sweet and smart dog who needs mental stimulation. His foster mom bought him some enrichment toys and he seemed to do well with them, but alas…he destroyed them rather quickly. To say he’s a super chewer is an understatement. So be prepared to stock up on a lifetime supply of Benebones and any big rubbery balls that are meant for super chewers. Regular toys with this little guy, do not stand a chance. Archer also lovvvvves food and will steal any food left within his reach – mainly other dogs’ food, but sometimes food left behind by little humans (or sometimes it’s food that they’re eating that he manages to steal). Archer is not a resource guarder but he would likely irritate a dog who is.
Due to his back issues Archer has some urinary incontinence, but he has shown no fecal incontinence. He is housetrained, but sometimes pees when he walks, leaving a zig-zag trail of urine. He wears a belly band (attached by suspenders to his harness) overnight, and during times when he can’t be taken out every couple hours. While he is potty trained, he has accidents due to his back issues…so a patient home with experience with back dogs would be ideal. Archer also has some cloudiness on his eyes, that the vet said was due to healed ulcers. It seems he is prone to ulcers, so he should be closely monitored for eye issues. Archer will likely require future testing/care, so it’s recommended his forever home be in proximity to a veterinary neurologist an ophthalmologist.
Someone who is home a lot for Archer would be great. His foster mom works from home, so he has gotten pretty use to having humans around. He can also be destructive if left alone. Seeing as Archer is extremely friendly, he could probably tag along with you to the office. Overall, Archer is a happy camper. He LOVES attention. If you don’t pet him and he wants to be petted, well then…a wall will do. You read that right! If you are not willing or able to dole out some pets, then Archer will rub himself up against a wall.
Archer’s foster mom has this to say about him: “Archer is an incredible dog. He is so friendly and so happy and just a joy to be around. He is also funny, quirky, smart and playful. He quickly learns routines – like our bedtime routine – and patiently waits to execute the routine. He is a smart cookie!”

About Archer
Archer had back surgery on 11.14.2023 on L2-3 and L3-4 before coming into FBRN’s care. He had an MRI on 01.15.2025 that noted new intervertebral disc extrusions at T13-L1 causing moderate to severe compression of the spinal cord on the left side with compression very close to T12. In addition, there were noted congenital vertebral spinal anomalies from T6 to T12. On 01.21.2025 he had a Hemilaminectomy procedure done. He is sometimes wobbly on his feet but does walk well otherwise. He must be carried up stairs and not be allowed to jump on/off furniture. He wears a belly band to help manage his incontinence.
Archer has a history of corneal ulcers which should be monitored for recurrence.
Archer has a high prey drive and must never be around cats, birds, or other small animals.
