Story
Our resident big cheese is up for adoption! Cabot—all 30-plus pounds of him—is officially on the hunt for the perfect forever home. Cabot was sadly surrendered to FBRN when his previous owners moved overseas and were unable to take him along. At his size, he might have sunk the boat!
After a period of adjustment, Cabot settled in well with his foster family and has proven to be an absolute love-muffin, with a generous pinch of mischief! At age 3, Cabot still has the energy of a puppy, which means that he plays hard and then loafs hard. He’s also insatiably curious, and has a tendency to get into things (and occasionally chew on them) when left to his own devices. True to his adventurous nature, Cabot loves exploring the neighborhood on leash and can easily walk a mile. And when he gets home, he’ll happily spend the afternoon snoozing on his person’s feet.
Cabot’s primary health concern is intervertebral disc disease, a.k.a. IVDD, in his neck region. He’s currently pain-free and doing great, but his people will need to keep an eye out for flare-ups, and get him to the vet right away if he starts showing signs of pain or decreased mobility. In addition, Cabot should avoid long flights of stairs, and should not be allowed to jump on or off the furniture. Cabot also has a very sensitive tummy, and changes in his diet can cause some unfortunate issues erupting from both ends. His new family should keep him on his current Canine Caviar Special Needs diet, along with a daily probiotic, and table scraps are a definite no-no.
Training-wise, Cabot has some work to do. While he’s got his basic commands down pat, his housebreaking is not at 100%, and while in foster care he has had accidents both inside and out of his crate. Cabot also needs to work on his leash manners, as he is a prodigious puller. Fortunately, he is a very smart boy who is eager to please, so with consistent and positive reinforcement, we are confident that he will improve in both areas. A training class would be an excellent way for Cabot to bond with his new owner, and we bet he’ll graduate at the top of his class!
The perfect home for Cabot is one where his people are around for most of the day, so he can get plenty of attention and exercise. He’ll need to be let out regularly for potty breaks, and he needs to be watched carefully to ensure that he doesn’t get into mischief. Cabot doesn’t much like being left alone and barks when crated, so a detached house would probably work best for him, unless you have soundproof walls or the world’s most understanding neighbors. Small kids aren’t a good fit for him, due to his rambunctious style of play, but Cabot thinks teenagers are just great. He’d also be happy to have another dog around the house, as he is submissive and gets along well with canines of all shapes and sizes. He was a regular doggie daycare attendee in his previous home, and he absolutely loved it! Cats and other small animals are a different story, as Cabot has a strong prey drive and sees them as snacks, rather than playmates. For that reason, we have to say no kitties or other pets of the non-canine variety.
Cabot’s foster mom is over the moon with her jumbo baby boy, and says, “Cabot is a very sweet dog who loves to play and snuggle with his family. He is very curious and is eager to learn.
