Canelo is a former stud dog, and was surrendered to a loving family to live out his retirement years. Unfortunately, Canelo suffered a back injury and his family quickly realized they could not afford his treatment. We are thrilled beyond measure to report that after crate rest followed by physical therapy, Canelo is up and walking. And not just walking—he’s even taken to the occasional zoomie, not to mention some truly impressive spins and twirls when he sees his people! That said, Canelo’s new family must treat his back very, very delicately. He must never be allowed to climb stairs or jump on/off furniture. Additional physical therapy would also be a great thing for Canelo, to ensure that his back muscles stay strong. Canelo’s new family should also expect the occasional puddle on the floor while he perfects his potty training. Canelo was a marker before his neuter, and while that behavior has largely stopped, he still occasionally forgets that going potty inside is frowned upon. (“Hey, nobody’s perfect,” says Canelo…although he comes awfully close!)

Canelo is a go-with-the flow type of guy who enjoys sunbeams, snuffling the floor for crumbs after mealtime, and melting in his people’s arms. He would be happy in just about any home, so long as he has the maximum amount of time possible with his family. Canelo is friendly with his English bulldog foster sibling and absolutely adores the tiny humans in the household—indeed, he can often be found sleeping under the baby’s crib. He’d be a perfect work-from-home dog, or a take-to-the-office dog. Canelo just wants to love and be loved, with perhaps some extra love on the side. He’s that sweet!

Canelo’s dedicated foster mom loves this boy to itty bitty pieces, and tells us: “Some of the reasons we are all already heartbroken to see this angel move to his forever home are: 1) When he pops out of his crate in the morning, he’s so excited to see us that he spins in circles and yelps the happiest little barks. It’s so adorable. 2) He’s adamant on being as close to his person as possible when they’re on the floor, and he’ll nuzzle his way into your lap for a snuggle any time of day. 3) He has angelic Frenchie snores. 4) He’s NOT gassy 🙂 5) He has the most touching dog eyes I’ve ever seen – he looks into your soul when you make eye contact <3. 6) He never begs, displays sass or tries to escape. Canelo is truly the perfect dog - which is pretty hard to come by with this breed, but whomever brings him into their home will truly be hitting the dog lottery. Potty training is a work in progress. Canelo suffers from from IVDD, and must always be carried up and down stairs and must not be allowed to jump off furniture.
