“Clara is shy and calm but once she is attached to you, she never wants to leave your side. She prefers to sleep in the bed with her head up near the pillow, always laying against me. When you stop petting her she will gently nudge you with her paw letting you know she would prefer if you would continue. She is the calmest snuggle bug you’d ever meet! As she is learning to live in a house, she will grab items such as a shoe but just a simple reminder and she sets it down and leaves it alone. Although she is only 3.5 years old she is an old soul who is sweet and gentle (as long as you’re not a new male entering her house). She would make a perfect companion for an older dog that appreciates her mellow energy. She rides in the car in her car seat well and even managed a 14-hour road trip over the holidays without complaint.”

Story
Still a young pup, you might think Clara has puppy energy to spare but think again. She is an old soul who has the chill factor of a much more mature dog. In fact, she would definitely take advantage of early-bird senior discount dinners if she could get away with it. Her favorite pastimes include napping, lounging, eating, snuggling and cuddling. Her best friend in her foster home is her 13-year-old foster brother. Due to her bite history, Clara must never be around small children, however, calmer households with no children or older, dog-savvy kiddos will be considered.
Having lived many years in a crate as a breeder, Clara is still learning how to play. She attacks her stuffed toys and enjoys chewing on Nylabones. She can show a feisty side when chasing squirrels out of her yard. She lives with dogs in her foster hoe and is very comfortable around them but hasn’t engaged in play. Clara will cozy up to the pug who is about her size, leaving the larger one on their own for cuddles. Clara is housebroken but she doesn’t necessarily signal when she needs to go out, so a regular schedule keeps her from having the rare accident in the house.
For all her cuteness and snuggle skills, Clara does not do well with males entering her space. If she meets men outside of her house, she does okay but she reacts to and lunges at male visitors in the home. Clara will need a firm pack leader and continued training to keep everyone safe. She is crate trained but prefers to have free reign. And we don’t blame her after all those years in a crate as a breeding momma! Since she is calm and relatively quiet, either a house or apartment would suit Clara. She will need some pet stairs up to the couch and bed or someone who can pick her up. She also wouldn’t mind a pillow next to yours with her name embroidered on the pillow case. Clara has some anxiety when left alone so the ideal family would have someone home with her the majority of the time. If you work in a low-traffic, mostly female office, she would love to nap at your feet while you work the day away.

Clara may be too big to fly in-cabin on a plane but she has proven to do very well on car rides so if you feel you have a Clara-shaped lap, fill out an application. If chosen, be prepared to come to Pennsylvania to pick up your new family member.
FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family.
FBRN dogs are in foster care in people’s private homes. For the foster families’ safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don’t set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
