“When Hazelnut came to my home she was afraid of everything, from a pet on the head to a bowl of food, even walking through a doorway was met with fear. She cowered and recoiled away from attempts to love on her. She couldn’t relax and I’d catch her falling asleep while standing. Little by little she has learned to do the most basic of things such as drink from a bowl, climb up and down stairs and sleep in a bed. The most important thing she has gained is the ability to trust and love. Every morning when the alarm goes off her head pops up as she waits for her chin scratches. Her personality comes out more and more every day, whether it be picking up a toy or running faster than her pug foster sister to try to steal a spot in her bed. Her little heart was just waiting to be freed and you can see her blossom more and more each day that passes.”

Story
The sweetest little tree nut has officially landed on the available page! Five-year-old Hazelnut found her way into our care after being surrendered by a commercial breeder. Now she’s ready to find her perfect forever home.
When Hazelnut arrived in foster care, she was afraid of everything. Slowly but surely, this blue beauty has learned how to be a beloved pet! With her newfound trust in people, she is now an official cuddle bug and Velcro Frenchie! If you’re on the couch, chances are Hazelnut will be snuggled in right next to you. However, Hazelnut doesn’t really jump and will require doggie stairs or human assistance to take her rightful place on the couch.
In her foster home, Hazelnut loves to snuggle up with the tween, but she’s been nervous of younger children who have visited. Hazelnut would do best in a home with children who are dog savvy and preferably over 16 years old. Hazelnut has never met a cat and for the safety of our feline friends, we do not recommend a forever home with cats. Hazelnut currently has two doggie foster siblings, but she doesn’t actually play with either of them. She will cuddle with her similarly sized foster sibling, but can be a bit of a bully to her larger foster sibling who is more submissive. If you have a dog, be prepared for slow introductions and potentially some bullying behavior while Hazelnut finds her place.
Hazelnut has made a lot of progress with potty training, but it is still a work in progress. She doesn’t signal that she has to go outside and therefore needs to be kept on a schedule to avoid accidents. Like the good girl she is, Hazelnut will promptly go potty outside and then rush right back in the house. Unless it’s a nice day. Hazelnut loves sunny days! If you’re looking for a partner to spend time outside with and catch some rays, you’ve found your gal.
Described by her foster mom as an old soul, Hazelnut prefers to spend her time following her person around, or snoozing on the couch and getting in a few chin scratches. She will occasionally play with toys, but her activities of choice are napping and cuddling and really just being near her people. Typical Velcro Frenchie! She’s not at all rambunctious and doesn’t seem to need another dog to play or pal around with. Hazelnut truly prefers her people and a home where she is an only dog would be ideal.
Hazelnut is crate trained and only barks in her kennel when her foster family leaves her alone. She’s a pretty quiet gal who rarely even joins in when the other dogs in the house bark at something outside. Hazelnut’s snoring is the loudest noise she makes!
This laidback girl would be fine in an apartment or a house. In a house, she needs a fenced yard to keep her from running away as she will bolt when she is startled. Hazelnut is still learning about the world around her, which can sometimes be scary! Hazelnut has separation anxiety and would do best in a home where someone is home the majority of the time. Hazelnut takes time to warm up to people, so a dog walker or pet sitter would likely make her uneasy at first. Because of her nervousness around loud noises and commotion, Hazelnut is not a great candidate for your office; although, a quiet office situation could work.
Here’s a few words from her loving foster mom, “When Hazelnut came to my home she was afraid of everything, from a pet on the head to a bowl of food, even walking through a doorway was met with fear. She cowered and recoiled away from attempts to love on her. She couldn’t relax and I’d catch her falling asleep while standing. Her personality comes out more and more every day, whether it be picking up a toy or running faster than her pug foster sister to try to steal a spot in her bed. Her little heart was just waiting to be freed and you can see her blossom more and more each day that passes.”
Do you have a special place in your home for a girl who is still coming into her own? If Hazelnut hits all the buttons in your heart, please go ahead and send in an application for her today!
If you’re picked, get ready to pack your bags and drive to the Philadelphia area. Hazelnut is the perfect co-pilot on the open road, but due to her anxiety, flying and being in an airport would be too stressful for her. FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family.
FBRN dogs are in foster care in people’s private homes. For the foster families’ safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don’t set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
