“Walter had a rough beginning after being surrendered to the county shelter and then coming into FBRN. During his 3 months of intense rehab he continued to remain sweet, stoic and courageous. Everyone he came into contact with absolutely adored him! His behaviors are exemplary although he needs to work on his over- enthusiasm toward visitors. He fit right into his foster family including his furry siblings. He’s easy going and a lick-the-bowl kind of eater, certainly motivated by treats. He is very special and deserves a loving family who can commit to his lifelong medical needs. The rewards of bringing Walter into your family will be endless!!”

Story
Walter suffers from allergies that leave him prone to ear infections. Unfortunately, an ear infection snowballed into a vestibular event last January that left Walter with partial face paralysis. As a result of the facial paralysis, he has a head tilt and dry eye, which requires daily medication. The good news is that his allergies are now under control with a special diet, medication and regular baths. His forever family should be prepared to continue this regimen.
Shortly after arriving in his foster home, Walter was diagnosed with IVDD. He thankfully made a full recovery with several weeks of strict crate rest, oral medications, and a course of cold laser treatments. It is important that his forever family understand that he is prone to disc issues, and must be carried up and down stairs, should not be allowed jump and should always use a harness. Even though his time in foster care started off quite eventfully, he is doing well now and he remains one sweet boy! We also think his head tilt is endearingly cute!
Before he arrived in FBRN care, Walter was isolated in a crate most of the time so he has enjoyed his new found freedom at his foster home. He enjoys spending time with his foster fur siblings and wandering in the yard. While he is not particularly interested in toys, he likes chews and is food motivated. He knows how to share and Walter is not food aggressive.
Walter will need someone who is willing to work on a few of his behavioral quirks. He gets VERY excited for visitors to the house, probably too excited! He is so enthusiastic that he has a tendency to come across as aggressive, which is not his intent. Walter also needs to work on his leash manners. He can be reactive on leash when other dogs approach. He is very food motivated, however, which should help with teaching him to contain his over enthusiasm and reactivity.
Walter’s ideal home can be a house or apartment as long as he has access to a yard. His family needs to be committed to Walter’s on-going medical needs, emotionally and financially. He is a loveable boy, but needs special attention. Walter would love a fur sibling and family members who are around a lot of the time during the day. A family with Frenchie experience would be ideal, although not required, and his family should have a supportive veterinary practice to follow Walter’s needs.

Walter would love for you fill out an application today! Then be prepared for a road trip to upstate New York if you’re selected because FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family. Walter is great in cars and would be a fantastic companion for a road trip.
FBRN dogs are in foster care in people’s private homes. For the foster families’ safety, we do not disclose specific locations and we do not set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
About Walter
WALTER has a history of ear infections that must be monitored for recurrence.
WALTER has IVDD, so he must always be carried up and down stairs and must not be allowed to jump on or off the furniture. He should be monitored for future flare-ups which may require emergency veterinary treatment.
WALTER has a chronic dry eye condition and must remain on Cyclosporine eye drops 2x daily, and Blink Gel Tears 2-3x daily.
WALTER had a Vestibular event in January 2023 which resulted in partial facial paralysis and a head tilt. He should be monitored for future flare-ups which may require veterinary treatment.
WALTER would benefit from obedience training to address how he excitedly greets strangers and his lunging/barking behavior when on a leash.
